Ryder Cup Results - 2002Belfry Golf & Country Club - Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, UKRyder Cup Score: Europe 15 ½ - USA 12 ½ Ryder Cup Captains: USA - Curtis Strange, EUROPE - Sam Torrence The Story of the 2002 Ryder Cup in the Belfry Golf & Country Club - Sutton Coldfield, UKEurope regained possession of the Ryder Cup thanks to a fantastic display of golfing prowess at the the Belfry. The Europeans produced a towering display of singles golf to beat the Americans in an area where they are traditionally strong. Ireland's Paul McGinley demonstrated great temperament to secure the win for the European Ryder Cup team by gaining a vital half point in his match with Jim Furyk of the US team. His 8 foot putt for par on the 18th hole at The Belfry clinched the match for the Europeans although the final score of the 2002 Ryder Cup was 15 ½-12 ½. This was the largest winning margin since 1985 also at the Belfry. Coincidentally it was the 2002 Ryder Cup Captain, Sam Torrence, that holed the deciding putt back in 1985 when the winning margin was 4 points. The modest European captain quipped "This had nothing to do with me. I led them to the water, and they drank copiously." The 2002 Ryder Cup, held over from 2001 due to the terrorist attacks in September 2001, Curtis Strange, captain of the US team, had gambled by keeping his two best players until last. Unfortunately his opposite team captain had decided to attack early in an attempt to amass an unassailable lead. The plan worked perfectly for Sam Torrence, the European Ryder Cup team and their supporters across Europe. The final day began with the teams level at 8 matches each. The European captain applied his strategy and right on cue the Europeans lead the 2002 Ryder Cup 12½ to 9½ after the first five matches. Despite a valiant attempt by Paul Azinger of the US - he holed from the bunker on the 18th (13 to 10) - to fight back the destination of the 2002 Ryder Cup was sealed by the nerveless McGinley when he clinched another ½ point for the Europeans. The reward for McGinley was to be thrown into the the lake at the 18th hole by his team mates. Some reward, but it had been a truly memorable day for the European Ryder Cup Team at the Belfry.
