The Story of the 1995 Ryder Cup in Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, New York, USA
The 1995 Ryder Cup was won by the European team in uncharacteristic fashion. Unusually the Europeans overpowered the US Ryder Cup team in the final day singles golf matches to wipe out the lead that the Americans carried into the last day of golf. Traditionally the singles matches are the strongest element of the US Ryder Cup armoury and as a consquence very few people gave the Europeans any chance as the enterd the singles matches with a two point deficit.
The European Ryder Cup team found inspiration in an unlikely golfer. Ireland's Philip Walton gained a point at the expense of Jay Haas of the US. This win contributributed to a 7 ½ to 4 ½ margin in favor of the European team. This turned the two point deficit into a one point winning margin allowing the Europeans to claim the 31st Ryder Cup.
Highlights of the 1995 team golf competition also include a magnificant 100% Ryder Cup debut by Phil Mickleson. The Cup rookie recorded three wins and no losses or halves. For Europe, Howard Clark's singles victory over Peter Jacobson included a hole-in-one (an eagle) on the par three 11th hole.
However perhaps the least-expected result was the vicory by Philip Walton over Haas. Relatively unknown in the US Walton built a commading three point lead coming into the 16th hole at Oak Hill Country Club. Haas made a spirited fight back and with Walton missing a five foot put on the 17th the US Ryder Cup supporters believed that Haas could come away with a half point. Despite the fact that Walton bogeyed the 18th hole Haas failed to make par largely due to a poor drive that found the trees. Despite his best efforts Haas could not redeem himself and the European team gained an all-important, if somewhat unexpected, Ryder Cup Team. The 1995 Ryder Cup would be travelling across the Atlantic ro Europe.
